Smart Snacking Strategies to Help Your Dog Shed Pounds and Stay Energized

Keeping your dog at a healthy weight can be a challenge, especially when treats are involved. Treats are a great way to reward good behavior and strengthen your bond, but they can also add extra calories that lead to unwanted weight gain. I’m Kim, founder of Pawfect Pet Treats, and I want to share how I helped my pup Chip lose a few pounds without losing his spark by using lower-calorie treats and smart snacking habits.

Rethinking Portions for Better Weight Control

One of the simplest ways to reduce your dog’s calorie intake is to rethink how you give treats. Instead of offering one large biscuit, try swapping it for two mini treats or breaking a bigger treat into halves. This way, your dog still feels rewarded but consumes fewer calories.

For dogs weighing between 10 and 20 kilograms, a good target is 5 to 10 low-calorie treats per day. Spread these treats throughout training sessions, walks, and cuddle time. Adjust the number based on your dog’s activity level and age. More active dogs may handle a few extra treats, while older or less active dogs need fewer.

Keeping a Daily Treat Budget

Treats should be part of your dog’s total daily calorie intake, not an addition. Calculate how many calories your dog needs each day and allocate a portion for treats. This helps prevent overfeeding and weight gain.

Use treats to reinforce positive behaviors like sitting, coming when called, or staying calm. For example, I found that using Fruit Medley Bites as training rewards kept Chip motivated longer than fatty snacks. These treats are lower in calories but still tasty enough to keep his attention.

Adding Variety and Enrichment

Dogs can get bored with the same treats every day. To keep things interesting and slow down fast eaters, try hiding small treats in toys or scattering a few in the garden. This adds mental stimulation and encourages natural foraging behavior, which can help burn extra energy.

Practical Tips to Manage Treat Intake

  • Weigh treats for a week: Use a kitchen scale to measure how much you’re giving. This helps you understand portion sizes and avoid accidental overfeeding.

  • Replace high-calorie extras: Instead of cheese, ham, or regular biscuits, offer low-calorie options like our Fruit Medley Bites.

  • Increase exercise: If your dog’s weight stalls despite cutting treats, add more playtime or longer walks.

  • Consult your vet: Always check with your veterinarian before making major changes to your dog’s diet or exercise routine. They can help create a tailored plan.
